This is one of the few good shots of the curved wooden trestle. All of the wooden structures on the layout, including this bridge, were made from balsa. At the time I lacked any kind of wood stains, but somewhere I'd read that concentrated coffee would work. As a result, whenever the humidity was high, the layout would smell quite tasty!

Although the end of the caboose in the left margin of the original photo looks effective at a small size, it was so close to the camera that it really suffered when enlarged. This is where the simple process of careful cropping can save an image.

Original imageImage specs: As the raw black and white  Polaroid print reveals, placing the pinhole over the front of the lens produces vignetting. Careful cropping and a bit of digital blending makes the "hole" go away. I also electronically tinted these images with a sepia tone to give them the appearance of photos taken a hundred years ago. Lighting was provided by a 100-watt bulb in a floodlight reflector.
