Here's a plan for first-timers that fits on a door, offering up a fictional branchline that services a coal mine and a clutch of small industries. This N scale layout is designed for a standard 36-inch flush door, and features all #7 switches, except for one left curved switch at the lower left corner. The coal mine trackage is all raised around 2-2.5 inches, and the grade up starts where the sidings cross. By the way, the fertilizer unloader is not some silly joke—here are photos of one.
